Mass Departures from the Current Roster
The primary reason Georgia may take 15 or more players from the transfer portal is to simply balance out the roster numbers due to a high volume of departures, both from the NFL Draft and, crucially, to the transfer portal itself.
High Transfer Outflow: In recent transfer windows, Georgia has seen a significant number of scholarship players leave. For example, reports indicate that for the 2024 season, 21 scholarship players transferred out, and in another recent cycle, 16 scholarship players transferred out. These departures often include highly-rated young players seeking immediate starting roles elsewhere (e.g., QB, LB, DL, DB).
Replenishing Positional Depth: This mass exodus, especially at positions like wide receiver, defensive back, and edge rusher, creates immediate needs that can’t be filled by high school recruiting alone, which takes time to develop. The portal offers players who can immediately compete for starting spots or provide critical depth.
The “One-Time Transfer” Rule: The ease of movement means even players who aren’t in the two-deep depth chart are more inclined to leave, forcing a team like Georgia to continually replace lower-tier roster spots just to maintain practice standards and injury reserves.
In essence, Georgia is entering an “arms race” to replace the talent they lose every year to the NFL and to the transfer market, necessitating a much higher number of incoming transfers than in previous eras to keep the roster at the 85-scholarship limit.
